As a college preparatory school, Sanford understands the importance
of providing a professional and individualized program designed
to aid students and their families in the college selection process.
College counseling begins the minute a student enters the Upper
School. The Director of College Counseling is available to all
students and parents and encourages families to call or schedule
an appointment whenever they have questions pertaining to the
admissions process. Though a formal college counseling program
begins in January of the junior year, much of the groundwork
is laid in grades nine and ten. Each student's academic program
is carefully reviewed each year to make sure that he or she is
enrolled in courses that are commensurate with his or her ability.
Teachers and advisors encourage students to strive for their
best in the classroom, and the school also encourages students
to get involved in a variety of extracurricular activities.
The goal of our college counseling program is to help each student
find a college that will provide the best match for his or her
particular needs. Though gaining admittance to college is the
ultimate goal, Sanford's college counseling program focuses on
the development of decision making skills. Through individual,
group, and parent conferences, the college counselor encourages
the students to evaluate their personal strengths, weaknesses,
likes and dislikes so that they can define what they are looking
for in a college. The college selection process can be a time
of great introspection and self discovery both
for students and their families. With the abundance of excellent colleges in the United
States, graduates from Sanford School have many exciting options
after graduation. For many seniors who have been accepted at
several outstanding colleges, the most difficult task is to settle
on a final choice.
