Upper School Athletics

In keeping with the spirit of a liberal arts education, and in lieu of a traditional Physical Education program, Sanford School requires participation in an afternoon sports program. DIAA (Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association) rules require that to participate in a sport, a student must pass 5 courses the preceding trimester, 2 of which must be in the  core areas of English, Math, Science, or Social Studies. The following sports are currently offered as part of our program.

Fall: soccer (boys), cross country, volleyball, field hockey, fitness and conditioning
Winter: basketball, wrestling, swimming, winter track
Spring: lacrosse, soccer (girls), tennis, golf, baseball

Fitness and conditioning is an athletic offering in the fall trimester that gives students a non-competitive opportunity to improve their level of physical fitness throughout the trimester. Strength training will be facilitated by use of the equipment in the weight room, and cardio-vascular fitness will be addressed through various outdoor/indoor activities. The class will meet every day from 3:30 until 5:00 p.m. Those students who successfully complete the trimester will earn one athletic/activity credit.

The following participation is required by grade level:
• Grade nine: Minimum of two credits as an active member of a Sanford team
• Grades ten, eleven and twelve: Minimum of one credit as an active member of a Sanford team

All students are required to complete a total of 8 athletic credits, 5 of which must be team credits, during four years. Students who end an athletic season in good standing will earn credits in the following categories:
• As an active team athlete: 1 team credit
• Approved performing arts credit:  Upon completion of required paperwork, 1 athletic credit will be waived for participation in the spring musical
• Fitness and conditioning elective: 1 athletic credit
• Manager or other support personnel
Game day manager:  1⁄2 credit
Full-time manager:   1 credit
