Upper School Health Courses

Health (trimester course) (Required)
This one trimester, state-required health course concentrates on issues of wellness and on the concept of health as a continuum. Topics discussed throughout the trimester include: the history of diseases, communicable and chronic diseases, prescription versus non prescription drugs, sexually transmitted diseases, drugs, alcohol and tobacco issues, eating disorders, nutrition, and other current health topics. 

Health Electives

Athletic Training I (trimester course)

This class explores the fundamentals of emergency response and athletic injury.  Through a combination of classroom lessons and interactive labs—covering topics as varied as the assessment of emergency situations, the proper procedure for dealing with blood, and the treatment of simple injuries—each student will successfully obtain certification in First Aid and CPR.  In addition, each student will be exposed to the basics of Athletic Training, exploring skills necessary to assess, prevent, and treat injuries.

Athletic Training II (prerequisite: Athletic Training I) (trimester course)

This class explores more advanced fundamentals of emergency response and athletic injury.  Sports safety specialist training will be taught and students will be certified from the American Red Cross. A more in depth approach will be taken with injury recognition. Specific athletic injury tests will be taught as well as emergencies that are heat/cold related, diabetes and asthma.  Advanced treatments will include spine boarding, immobilization and basics for rehabilitation.
