Home & School Association

Home & School Association Organizational Overview

The Home & School Association is a parent-run, volunteer organization that helps promote a close relationship between Sanford School and its parents.  All parents, faculty, staff and administration are welcome and encouraged to participate.  General Membership Meetings are held five times a year and all parents, faculty, staff and administration are encouraged to attend to hear updates on school and Association activities, and to participate in discussions of matters of mutual interest.  The Association Officers and Committee Chairs work closely with the Head of School, Division Heads and Grade Representatives.

What does the Association do?
The Home & School Association promotes communication and positive relationships between parents and the School.  It also coordinates the activities of parents in a myriad of activities including events to raise funds for additional equipment/supplies for our children, teacher appreciation activities and social events for student groups, parents and families.  In 2007-2008, these events include:

Fall Event: The traditional Home & School Fall Event this year will be an evening of live music, good food, drink and conversation to be held on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at Sanford.  This evening will provide the perfect opportunity for parents, faculty and administration to get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere. This is a FREE event.

Auction or Spring Event2007-2008 is our Spring Event year. The next Auction will be in the 2008-2009 school year.  These events raise money for the benefit of our children.  In the past, the proceeds have provided playground equipment, computers and software, science lab equipment, musical instruments, tent for outdoor functions, video and camera equipment, library books and many other items that would not have been available for our children without these funds.  These events are run by Sanford parents with assistance from all members of the Sanford community including faculty and staff.

Caroling in the Quad -  A December Tradition:  This year’s Caroling and refreshments will take place on Friday, December 14th at 7:30 a.m.

Teacher AppreciationIn the spring, a very special luncheon is served to the faculty, staff and administration with a presentation of books.  These books are placed in the school libraries in their honor with our gratitude.  This is our way of saying thank you for their commitment and dedication to our children.

Student UnionThis is a group of representative parents and students from Sanford, Tower Hill, Tatnall, Friends and Archmere who plan dances and other social events for the students that attend these high schools.  Traditionally, there are five dances each year with each school hosting one dance.  Admission is charged and the profits are donated to charities of the students’ choice.

After Prom PartyThis event provides a safe, supervised venue for Prom attendees to continue their celebration.

How do I volunteer?
To volunteer, call or e-mail your grade representative, or the President of the Home & School Association or the Chair(s) of the Event.  You can also call the Home & School Office on Ext. 373 and leave a message.  At the end of each school year the Volunteer Coordinator distributes a survey to all Sanford families listing all volunteer opportunities at Sanford.  Completion of this survey prior to the school year helps us get a head start on our planning.  In addition to the Home & School activities, the Survey lists opportunities to volunteer for over 27 additional school activities including grade activities, parent gatherings, field day, book fairs, class pictures, grandparents’ day, performing arts boosters and many others.  Even if you did not complete the survey in the summer, volunteers are always welcome and needed.

Who participates in Home & School meetings?
EVERYONE!  All parents, faculty, staff and administration are welcome and encouraged to attend all meetings.  The meetings are a forum for discussion and a mechanism to hear reports from the Head of School, Division Heads, Committee/Activity Chairs and other parent/faculty groups.  These meetings provide an opportunity to ‘learn the latest’ about School and Association activities.

What is a ‘Grade Representative?’
A ‘Grade Representative’ is the liaison between you and the School.  Each grade is assigned a volunteer parent representative chosen from the volunteer surveys prior to each school year.  They disseminate information, assist with the organization of class activities, assist with the organization of an event for parents/guardians and encourage and promote parent participation in Home & School Activities.  They also assist the faculty with activities as needed.  It is imperative that every family provide their Grade Representative with their e-mail address.  If this is not possible, please provide them with a telephone number.

How are the dues used?
The Home & School is a totally independent, volunteer organization.  The dues of $15 per family go a long way in helping the Association operate and in funding the above activities.  Dues are charged to your account at the beginning of the school year.  If you have a question or problem with this, please call the business office.
