H & S Minutes for May 23, 2007 (*To Be Approved )

Kristen Kuhn welcomed everyone and thanked them for attending. She asked for the approval of the March 23, 2007 Meeting Minutes. The Minutes were unanimously approved.
II. Old Business
A. Spirit Store:
Kristen read notes from Sandy King and reported that people were getting used to the new Friday hours for the Spirit Store and it was doing very well. Volunteers are needed to work at the Spirit Store and Sandy encouraged people (especially those with flexible schedules) to sign up on the next volunteer survey.B. Community of Concern:
Community of Concern “Guide for Parents on Substance Abuse Prevention” booklets were distributed to all Sanford families from JK-12. Sandy has heard positive feedback specifically from lower school parents. Thanks to Meena Caufield and Alice Johnston, who will be taking on this project from here.C. Caroling on the Quad:
Looking for smiling faces for Caroling on the Quad next December. Idea being to take it over for the following year. Sandyking@verizon.net. On a personal note it was a pleasure working on the prom committee this year.D. Spring Auction News:
Belle Natali and Kathy Healy. Kristen referred everyone to copies of the printed spreadsheet outlining the auction. Kathy stated the final number brought in that evening was $151,000.00. Much applause. Kathy wished continued success to next years chairs: Kathy Zabel and Amy Kuplinski, and they have named their co-chairs as well, Kristen Kuhn and Pam Allingham.E. Four School Parent Awareness:
Magdalena Tamura-Reid reported 419 people pre-registered to hear Dan Kindlon speak. 38% from Tower Hill, 29% from Sanford, 20% from Tatnall and 12% from Friends. We were well represented. Tatnall to host next year’s speaker.F. After Prom:
Elise Bobbitt reported the total budget for the prom was $6,000.00. H&S donates $1,000.00 and matches up to $2,000.00 if ticket sales don’t cover cost of after prom. Tickets were charged to parents’ Sanford accounts. All fund raising goes to the prom. This year was the first year to use buses. Both the kids and the parents loved the buses. Everyone was happy. This year’s theme was “ 007 Mission”. After spring break, the prom/after prom was kicked off with a PowerPoint presentation. Both 11th & 12th grades participated with all but 5 kids attendingG. Annual Fund:
Karen Riordon- wrapping up annual fund which closes June 30. 76% of parents have contributed to date. We have 8th grade volunteers calling on all non-donors.III. New Business
A. Allocations:
Kristen Kuhn referred to and read from a print out of H&S allocations. We were also able to obtain money for summer study grants and the endowment. If you have specific questions regarding additional items, information will be available at the end of the meeting.B. Budget 07-08 operational budget:
Kristen Kuhn discussed items on the budget. YTD figure 05/06 used $700.00 to pay for Parent Awareness booklets. $1,200.00 not used will be put in escrow to save money when Sanford hosts the guest speaker in 08. Sanford is responsible for 55% of the cost of the 2008 Four Parent Awareness Speaker. Kristen asked for a motion to approve it was granted.C. Volunteer Surveys:
Christine Gilbert was not at the meeting but asked Kristen Kuhn to read from her notes. The dept. heads have made some changes to the vol. survey and changes will be made and given to Rosemary Brooks for approval. Surveys will be mailed by mid June and completed surveys are due back by July 15. Surveys will be made available prior to the first day of school in the H&S office. Suggestion for making the volunteer survey available on the web to be determined. Any questions call Christine Gilbert.D. Grade Activity Fund:
Rosemary Brooks requested that all reimbursement forms get turned in. Thank you to all grade reps for getting information out to parents. Anyone interested in being grade rep next year let her know. Student Union will be a part of H&S. Students made $839.00 last year, all proceeds go to charity. Also, please feel free to volunteer for a grade other than the grade your children are in.IV. Reports

Jane Clampitt referred to the Profit and Loss statement. There are items of income that have not been reported yet.B. Division Reports
Lower School
Nancy Hebard reported that the 2nd grade is painting a map of the US on the lower school playground reinforcing what they have learned in the classroom. The LS show took place under the direction of Jewel Boulet, the theme; “The History of Communication”. Grandparents Day was a success. Thank you to Pam and Wayne Rapine and parent volunteers. Field day is coming up trying to feed 500 in 5 minutes! Again thank you to parent volunteers. Next years theme will be “Respect” with workshops and guest speakers planned.Middle School
Eph Humphreys reported that 8th grader Cindy Wong won the singles tennis championship held at the U of D. Keevin Galbraith has been chosen to represent the US in the indoor league. The 6th graders are involved in Project Pride and this year they are responsible for the MS gardens. Please check out the gardens. 7th 7&8th graders are winding down. MS had a very successful sports season. Thank you to the H&S for the summer study grants.Upper School
Mark Wagner reported they had an Alumni Career Day and this year’s theme was banking. Juniors and seniors learned about careers in banking. Juniors and seniors also had the formal Honor Society event where students are inducted based on superior scholarship. Seniors are involved in their senior projects. They are doing a variety of things with two kids in NYC working on an internship at Teen Vogue magazine as well as students in D.C., Wilmington and N.C. Students to return June 4 and will have a forum to review senior projects and wrap up the year. First Day Ceremony to be held next week, where juniors are welcomed to being seniors and leadership roles. Senior Parent Dinner during the week of graduation. There is the End of year academic rewards program and then commencement. Seven students prepared and gave speeches. MS teacher, Mark Bosick will speak at the commencement. Girl’s soccer team made it to the playoffs. Golf team won district championship.C. Head’s Report:
Chip began his remarks by commenting on how Sanford students stay connected with their school. Chip mentioned the Memorial Day Program in the quad tomorrow. Benjamin Civiletti, former U.S. Attorney General and Sanford Grandparent, will be speaking. Chip mentioned the names of people on the buildings at Sanford will be honored tomorrow. We are going to reflect why we have this holiday. Chip thanked Belle Natali and Kathy Healy again for their efforts and the full time job they did with the auction. Chip mentioned the allocations process. Chip mentioned how over the years a few members of the faculty where able to participate in summer programs. Now, due to Home and School and Sanford, 44 members will receive support this summer. Chip thanks H&S and Sanford for the support and the ability to provide summer study programs to faculty. Chip reports that two seniors are going to San Francisco for an opera singing competition. Chip singled out and thanked Kristen Kuhn for her work and organization as President of H&S.Kristen Kuhn thanked Chip, Heads of School and all of those who have helped her.
