Ivana Gatica Wins Margaret DuPont Boden Award for Writing Achievements

Senior Ivana Gatica was recently honored by the National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW) for her achievements as the Gold Key Portfolio winner for the Delaware Writing Region in this year’s Scholastic National Writing Awards.
At a reception at the DuPont Country Club on April 21, 2015, members of the Diamond State Branch of the NLAPW presented Ivana with the Margaret DuPont Boden Award. This honor is awarded annually to a Delaware high school junior or senior to encourage her to pursue a career in writing.

The event was attended by Delaware’s Poet Laureate JoAnn Ballingit, as well as Gold and Silver Key winners from the Delaware region and their families. Ballingit introduced the winners and shared a poem of National Poetry Month. Ivana herself was invited to read an excerpt from her work; she chose her short story “The Gravedigger.”

In addition, Ivana’s poem “My Brother’s Shoes,” a meditation on a pair of discarded Adidas, was featured in delawareonline.com’s weekly “On Poetry” column for the week of April 19. The columnist compares the poem to William Carlos Williams’s famous one-sentence verse “The Red Wheelbarrow,” and calls it “meditative and inconclusive,” the product of a “voice and tone both whimsical and serious.”

Congratulations to Ivana on these well-deserved honors!
