Sanford Students Win 33 Scholastic Art Awards

Nineteen Sanford students were recognized in this year’s Scholastic Art Awards competition, winning a total of 33 awards.
The awards showcased the diverse talents of Sanford’s artists, as students were recognized for work in nine different categories: Comic Art, Design, Digital Art, Drawing and Illustration, Editorial Cartoon, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, and Printmaking. Under the instruction of art teachers Meg Fierro, Nina Silverman-Weeks, and Maria Tate, students earned six “Gold Key” awards, eleven “Silver Keys,” and sixteen “Honorable Mentions.”

More than 90,000 seventh through twelfth graders across the country submit work to the annual competition, which is sponsored by the Scholastic Corporation and presented by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Work is judged by industry leaders and exhibited in New York and at local exhibitions around the country. “For most young winners,” the Corporation has stated, “this recognition is their first experience of being identified as serious artists and writers, and the impact on their self-perception can be life-changing.”

Work earning Gold and Silver Key recognitions will be exhibited at the Arts Center/Gallery at Delaware State University in Dover. Award-winning students and their families will attend a reception and awards presentation ceremony at the exhibit on Saturday, February 4.
