Sanford Alumna Shares Storm Chasing Adventures with Science Students

Sanford alumna Lisa Ross ‘82 recently spoke to Beth Whipple’s 6th grade science class about her unusual hobby: storm chasing.
Lisa, an underwriting manager at Freddie Mac, has always been fascinated by extreme weather like lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Via speakerphone and PowerPoint presentation, she told the class about a recent experience joining some seasoned meteorologists as a “storm tourist.”

Lisa spent a week last spring in the area of the US where tornadoes are most frequent, which stretches through Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma and is nicknamed “Tornado Alley.” She helped collect data on developing storms, and enjoyed the camaraderie of bonding with the storm chasers in intense situations. She shared photos of a huge supercell thunderstorm, a rare and severe storm that features a rotating cyclone within the depths of the storm. During the trip she slept in truck stop motels and ate dinner at gas stations as the team tracked storms, and enjoyed the experience so much that she plans to return for two weeks this summer. The science students are eagerly looking forward to updates from her next trip.
