Sanford Club Team Sails to Victory

In its first season as a team, the Sanford Sailing Club won the 2014 Spring Fleet Racing Series, a competition hosted by the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia.
Over the course of eight weekly regattas, the Sanford team competed on the Delaware River against 60 sailors from 12 other schools.

In the spring of 2013, Sanford senior Trevor Long founded the Sanford Sailing Club. At the time, he was its sole participant. But this year the Club fielded a full team: Trevor, 9th grader Connor Long, and 10th graders Sebastian (Bass) Conde and Christo Pape. The Club is a member of the Main Line Scholastic Sailing Association, a local Philadelphia organization that has partnered with the Corinthian Yacht Club to sponsor high school sailing competitions. As part of the Association, Sanford competes against suburban Philadelphia schools like Notre Dame, Malvern, Conestoga, and Harriton, among many others.

The Club is currently recruiting sailors for its upcoming season. The team will practice twice a week and compete in Fleet Racing each Sunday. In Fleet Racing, each team enters an “A” boat and a “B” boat, each consisting of a skipper and a crew. The team’s total score is calculated from each boat’s score in its own division. All students are welcome—Interscholastic Sailing is one of the few high school sports where girls and boys compete directly against one another.

Congratulations to the Sanford team. We look forward to another exciting season on the river!
