Sanford Fifth Grader to Compete in Delaware National Geographic Bee

Matthew Kaser has qualified to compete in the Delaware National Geographic Bee, which will be held March 27 at Smyrna High School.
Matthew advanced to the state level of the competition by winning the Middle School’s bee and passing a qualifying test administered by the National Geographic Society. As one of the highest-scoring students in Delaware, he was invited to compete at the state level.

Students from grades four through eight compete in the school bees. Wondering how you’d fare as a Bee contestant? This year’s school Bee competitors had to answer these questions:

Six-time Super Bowl champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers, play football near the source of the Ohio River in which state—Alabama or Pennsylvania? (Pennsylvania.)
Balboa Park, with more than ten museums, performing arts centers, and gardens, is located in which southern California city? (San Diego.)
Taylor Swift performed songs from her album Red last summer in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of which Asian country that borders the South China Sea? (Malaysia.)
Disney’s blockbuster movie Frozen is set in the fictional land of Arendelle, which was largely inspired by the country of Norway. Norway is located on which European peninsula? (Scandinavian Peninsula.)
One winner from each state competition will receive $100, a copy of the National Geographic Atlas of the World, a medal, and a trip to Washington D.C. in May to compete in the National Geographic Bee Championship for a chance to win a $50,000 scholarship.

The National Geographic Bee, now in its 27th year, is an educational program of the National Geographic Society. The Bee is sponsored by Google and Plum Creek Timber Company.

Congratulations and good luck to Matthew!
