Sanford Students Show Their Business Savvy

On December 15, a team of students in Sanford’s Intro to Business class won the high school division of the University of Delaware’s chapter of the “Stock Market Game.”
The game, which ran from October 6 to December 12, is “designed to introduce students in grades 4–12 to the global economy and the world of finance and investing.” Students divide into groups, each of which receives a hypothetical starting sum of $100,000. Each team makes decisions about how to invest that money, and follows the markets at real-time prices over the course of 10 weeks. The team with the most valuable portfolio at the end date wins.

The Intro to Business class, taught by Gloria Diodato, fielded seven teams this year, ranging in size from four students to a single student. In a field of 24 high school teams from across the state, Sanford teams placed in four of the top five spots. Four seniors—Chester Burnett, Haolin Chen, Jacob Freeman, and Matthew Lupton—made up the winning team. David Kelly placed second, and Kalena Hughes, Frederic Ryle, and Caleb White’s team placed fourth. Anneli Wingertz came in fourth, and Brett Kosinski and Justin McLellan earned eighth place.

A reception for the winning teams will be held on Wednesday, January 21. The Stock Market Game at the University of Delaware is sponsored by the Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship. The national program is run by the SIFMA Foundation, which works to increase knowledge of the financial markets for people from all backgrounds.
