Sanford Students Triumphant at Annual Latin Day Celebration

On Thursday, April 10th, Sanford Middle and Upper School Latin students traveled to The Tatnall School for the 2014 installment of Latin Day, an annual celebration of the Latin language and Roman culture.
Under the direction of teacher Amy Haury, the students competed in a number of exciting Latin-inspired events, including a chariot race; the “Certamen” or quiz bowl competition; a costume contest; and a number of athletic events such as “Atalanta’s Golden Apple Race” and the “Stygian stomp.”

The well-prepared classicists competed against students from Tatnall, Tower Hill, Independence, and Upland Country Day. The Sanford 5th and 6th grade team, composed of Owen Andreasen, Jenna Warren, Eleanor Vander Laan, and Charlie Sykora, triumphed in the Certamen competition. Upper Schoolers Josh Bostick, Sarah Boone, Alina Caulfield, and Alexandra Somerville also came in first in their round, and 7th and 8th graders William Zimmer, Aaron Lafferty, Jacob Lafferty, and Patsy Donahue placed second.

Fifth grader Emma Colby emerged as champion in the costume contest for her interpretation of the character Medusa. The judges especially loved the rubber snakes Emma tied into her hair.

Sanford seventh-grader William Zimmer collected one of the day’s top honors. His Despicable Me-inspired illustration of a Minion character dressed in Roman garb was chosen to grace the official Latin Day T-shirts, as the best example of a design that “would represent Roman culture in a fresh and creative way.”

Ms. Haury and fellow teacher Carol Moore have been helping to plan Latin Day for several years. With the enthusiastic cooperation of the area’s independent schools, they anticipate that it will be a successful and fun event for years to come.
