Sophomore Eric Ayala to Play for Puerto Rican Under-16 National Basketball Team

Sanford basketball star Eric Ayala’s career is about to go international.
The sophomore has been selected for Puerto Rico’s Under-16 National team, which will compete in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Championships in Argentina this June.

"It's a very big deal," Ayala told the News Journal. “This is a blessing, being able to go down there and play. I cherish every moment because any day can be your last. I just appreciate the opportunity."

Eric will travel to Puerto Rico in late May to play in four exhibition games with his team before they head to Argentina.

“It's pretty exciting," said Sanford coach Stan Waterman. "It's a good representation of our program."

Sanford finished its season at 19–4, losing to Polytech in the state semifinals. Eric averaged 14 points a game.

Eric is the second Sanford player in recent history to play in the FIBA Championships: in 2013, Khallid Hart ’12 played for the Virgin Islands team. Khallid recently finished his sophomore year at Marist College. He averaged 14.7 points a game for the Red Foxes this season.

Congratulations and good luck to Eric!
