Project: Run for Hope
In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Sanford School spent most of 2005 directing their fund raising events toward the relief effort. A decision by the Middle School to adopt a school that was directly affected by the storm allowed the students and teachers to put a face to those individuals who were so adversely affected and made their fundraising efforts more meaningful.
Hope Academy is a small Christian school located in D’Iberville, Mississippi that was displaced as a result of Hurricane Katrina. As is evidenced by the photos below, the school and all of its contents were destroyed as well as many of the surrounding homes belonging to the students and their families.

What survived was the unwavering spirit and sense of community amongst the students and faculty of Hope Academy as well as the intention to reestablish themselves while resuming classes in teachers’ homes and FEMA trailers. Our students chose this school based on many different criteria, but the main reason was that Hope Academy was small enough for Sanford to help make a real difference as well as an immediate impact on the rebuilding process.
Our upcoming fundraiser, RUN FOR HOPE, is a 5 K run-walk open to students and families, faculty, friends, alumni and members of the surrounding community who are interested in supporting a worth while cause while having a great time. Scheduled for Homecoming Weekend on September 30, 2006 at 9:30 AM, it will be preceded by a warm- up to music and a sack race open to participants ages 4-7. Refreshments will be served to all at the close of the event.
