Point Guard Park to Play for Seton Hall

Lauren Park '19 signed a National Letter of Intent in November and committed to play basketball at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey.
Park, who has been a five-year starter for the Sanford Warriors, spent time at the school while classes were in session. With 6,000 undergraduates, she said the size was a factor in her decision. “I liked that the campus felt like home, just like Sanford. They have a diverse student body and a great atmosphere. I also like that it is located pretty close to my home and family.”

Park credits her entire family for much of her success as a basketball player. Since the sixth grade, she has played for an AAU team. Her current team, Team Takeover, is based in Washington, DC, which meant a lot of travel time on I-95 for practices and competitions. Their summer 2018 league play ended with them being ranked second in the country with a 48–2 record. Park said her travels to Chicago were among her very favorites, but she noted that she had been to many very nice places she would not have otherwise visited because of basketball.

Several coaches have been extremely influential in helping Park progress as a basketball player. She particularly credits Sanford’s coach, Marcus Thompson, and her AAU Team Takeover coaches Ron, Brian, and Shay for their assistance.

As a senior, Park is once again a team captain for the Warriors, as she was during her junior year. Her teammates value her leadership, her work ethic, and her commitment to the team. She is not concerned about her individual stats, successes,or accomplishments, although there have been many, including reaching the 1,000-point milestone at Sanford’s 2018 home opening game. The game was briefly interrupted to allow Park’s parents to join her on the court for a photo and for the home crowd to celebrate this achievement.

Park is actively involved with Sanford’s Diversity Alliance club. When she has those rare moments of free time, she likes to relax and spend time with her family and friends. She shared: “Through my participation in basketball, I have learned to never give up and to fight for what I believe in, both on and off the court.” That philosophy aligns with Seton Hall’s motto of “Despite hazards, move forward.”

Lauren Park’s Sanford family wishes her another success season as a Warrior and continued success as a Seton Hall Pirate.
