Lacrosse Coach Tim Lucky Lauded by his Peers
Sanford’s Boys’ Lacrosse coach, Tim Lucky, was recognized as Delaware’s Boys’ Lacrosse Coach of the Year on Tuesday, June 10 at the annual All-State/All-Star Senior dinner, which was held at Dover High School. Lucky was selected for this honor by the Delaware Interscholastic Boys’ Lacrosse Coaches Association (DIBLCA).
Lucky has been a varsity head coach at Sanford since the 2017 season. This year he led his team to an impressive 14–3 record. They advanced to the DIAA quarterfinals, losing a heartbreaker to Archmere Academy with a final score of 14–13.
Lucky, who played baseball for many years during his youth, was first introduced to the sport of lacrosse when Jason—a high school lacrosse player—moved into his neighborhood. Lucky caught what he says is known as the “lacrosse bug,” and he has been associated in some capacity with the sport ever since, which started by becoming Ketner’s teammate in high school. Upon college graduation, Lucky became an assistant coach, serving his alma mater North Harford High School and then Edgewood High School. Fortunately for Sanford, he found his way to Hockessin, where he coached three years in the Middle School before taking the helm of the Upper School team.
It was his own high school coach, John Grubb, who influenced Lucky and who continues to this day to act as a friend, mentor, and advisor. “I strive to be the kind of coach to my guys that Coach Grubb was to me,” elaborated Lucky. “I want to be more than someone who teaches them the game. I try to build relationships with the boys and act as a father-figure/big brother. My hope is that they will come to me and share the positive experiences they have and bring their struggles and challenges to my attention so I can be of help to them.” Like all good coaches, Lucky stresses the value and importance of teamwork and the sense of camaraderie and community being on a team can provide. “I try to help build character in addition to lacrosse skills. The young men are learning life lessons that will serve them far beyond their high school lacrosse playing days,” explained Lucky.
There is always plenty of lacrosse conversation at the Lucky household, as he has two sons, Timothy '21 and Devon '22 who are on the team. “I came to Sanford because of them. Like all of my players, they work hard and try to consistently improve. It is an honor to coach at Sanford and certainly a special privilege to coach my two boys.”
“I am appreciative and humbled to receive this award,” stated Lucky. “One coach does not successfully run a varsity level team, and certainly not a lacrosse team. I thank my assistants—Ensign Simmons, Eph Humphreys, Dan Bachtle, and Reese Gaylor '12. I congratulate our young men who come each day ready to learn, to improve, to compete. Our collective goal is to build a lacrosse program that any lacrosse player in the state of Delaware would be proud to be a part of.”
Athletic Director Joan Samonisky added: “I am thrilled that Tim has been recognized by his coaching peers with this Coach of the Year Award. It is a well-earned honor for Tim and for our boys’ lacrosse program.”
