Students Participate in Leadership Conference

On Monday, November 6, Corey Perkins ’20, Hannah Bescript ’19, and Trent Wall ’19 joined nearly 150 student representatives from Delaware high schools at the annual Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA)/Special Olympics DE Student Leadership Conference.
The Sanford students traveled to Delaware Technical and Community College, where they were able to attend three different workshops designed to train and prepare them for leaderships roles within the school and their community. The breakout sessions included offerings such as: “Communication and Goal Setting,” “Unified Sports and Student Expos,” “Meaningful and Intentional Leadership,” and a panel discussion on “Getting Your School Involved.”

This year there was a huge emphasis placed on educating participants about the Unified Sports Program, which is a youth-centered, school-focused initiative that uses Special Olympics’ sports and education programs to encourage inclusion, participation, and leadership in students through the power of sports. Dean of Students and Assistant Athletic Director Stan Waterman noted, “Participating in this event provided Hannah, Corey, and Trent the chance to learn about and develop school partnerships and leadership opportunities through sports. Their attendance provided them with the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to create and sustain school communities that promote acceptance, respect, and inclusion.”

Congratulations to these three excellent Sanford athletes, representatives, and school leaders.
