Basketball Star Cooney Begins a New Chapter

The basketball journey of Trevor Cooney '11 has led him to record-setting performances at both Sanford School and Syracuse University. After graduating college with a degree in communications, Cooney found he was not quite ready to leave the world of basketball. This led him to accept the opportunity to play professionally in Europe, most recently in Spain.
However, earlier this year, Cooney decided it was time to move back home and look for employment outside the realm of basketball—or so he thought! “I have always been intrigued by commercial real estate and the projects and development that go into it. I thought that might be a good avenue to explore as a new career. My research led me to BPG, a local real estate company with many interesting projects. I contacted them and learned of their work with a new sports management project, the 76ers Fieldhouse. Because of my background with basketball and other sports, it seemed like a great fit for me to join BPG|SPORTS and run the court side of the Fieldhouse.”

As director of courts, Cooney will create and manage opportunities for the courts to be actively utilized by people of all ages and abilities. He will coordinate youth-adult basketball/volleyball leagues, camps, and clinics, all taught by talented individuals dedicated to supporting the youth of the community. Early in October, Cooney kicked off his new career with a one-day, free basketball clinic at Prices Run Park, where dozens of youngsters turned out for an afternoon of instruction and drills. He and the other instructors made sure that the children had as much fun as he was having! Additionally, Cooney has already created a basketball academy for middle and high school athletes to develop and enhance their basketball skills. Cooney was well known for both his talent in and commitment to the sport of basketball. In the classroom and on the court, Cooney earned praise for his work ethic and team spirit, skills that he hopes to share with students who attend any of the offerings at the Fieldhouse.

AAU teams and organizations will have the opportunity to use the facility on the weekends, when internal programing is not taking place. Non-sports teams are also expected to find use for the court space. Cooney elaborated: “BPG|SPORTS wants this facility to be an integral part of the community, and a big part of my job is to find ways to keep it busy. I am excited to have the opportunity to work in my home town and be a part of creating a special space where children can grow and learn and play. I appreciated having the chance to be a professional athlete, and I was able to do so with the incredible support I received from my family and coaches. I am now just as committed to this new phase of life. It’s great to be back home and give some of that same support to young athletes. I am lucky that I still get to devote my energies to what I love.”

We at Sanford have long known that Trevor Cooney is a special young man. We are delighted to welcome him home, and we wish him continued success with this new chapter in his life.
