Jenkins' Talents Yield Title & Scholarship

On November 4th at a biannual event sponsored by the Wilmington (DE) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Taryn Jenkins '19 was crowned Miss Jabberwock 2018.
Jenkins was chosen from a field of 30 participants, all of whom who had completed an application process, met academic requirements, and participated in six months of pre-event activities. Jenkins received an $11,500 college scholarship, which she hopes to use at Hampton University next fall. Fellow Sanford student Dasia Straker '20 was also involved in Jabberwock and was awarded a $4,500 college scholarship.

Jenkins shared: “Jabberwock afforded me the opportunity for personal growth and development outside of my school environment. Over the course of the past six months, I had time to think about who I am, my journey, and my goals. In addition to the generous scholarship, my reward was getting to know and connect with other young ladies that I probably would have never met. I appreciated the networking opportunities and the chance to learn from the mentors, all members of Wilmington (DE) Alumnae Chapter. This experience will surely help me with my transition to college next fall.”

The young women worked with the members of the sorority to present the show “Imagine Me.” Guests were entertained with skits, songs, and dances, which showcased some of the talents of the finalists. This biannual event is a major fundraiser for the Wilmington (DE) Alumnae Chapter, which enables the organization to generously provide these college scholarships.

Lewis Carroll penned the term “jabberwocky” in his novel Through the Looking Glass, his sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The word connoted a whimsical, non-sensical meaning. For more than 80 years, hundreds of chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., both nationwide and abroad, have sponsored a fundraising event called the Jabberwock. While the events are unique, the intent of the Jabberwock is universal and not at all whimsical: to provide young women with enriching opportunities to participate in socially and culturally enriching experiences, leadership training, community service, and personal development—all with the intent of broadening their horizons while they prepare for their next big step: college.

Congratulations to Taryn and Dasia for their successes in Jabberwock 2018. May they always keep a bit of whimsy, or jabberwocky, in their spirit as they work hard to achieve their personal and academic goals.
