Sanford Standout Bloom Signs with UD

When Tommy Bloom ’19 started playing lacrosse with his brother Danny ’13 and his cousin, he had no idea that they had introduced him to a sport that he would grow to truly love. As a third grader playing for the Wilmington Wings, he could not have imagined that one day he would sign a National Letter of Intent to play Division 1 lacrosse at the University of Delaware, but that is exactly what happened in November 2018.

Bloom had several scholarship offers, and he enjoyed the experience of visiting college campuses, but he said that choosing the University of Delaware was an easy decision. He elaborated: “I was very impressed with the lacrosse program and the culture that Coach Ben Deluca and his staff are building. In addition, the University of Delaware offers excellent academic opportunities for me.” As a student who has earned first honors every semester of his high school experience, it is not surprising that he strongly considered both the athletic and academic aspects of colleges. While still undecided, Bloom is leaning towards a major in business management.

At Sanford, Bloom has been a varsity lacrosse starter since eighth grade, and he has been a team captain since his sophomore year. Additionally, he has been invited to attend very selective camps and has played in numerous tournament games. Often the top 40 players in a tournament are asked to compete in an All-Star game, and Bloom was frequently invited participate in those contests.

The Delaware Independent School Conference (DISC) has named Bloom to its First Team for the past three years. He holds the high school record for being the fastest player to earn over 100 goals, which occurred in his sophomore year with a total of 111 goals. He was a member of Team Delaware at the 2018 National Lacrosse Classic and was in the 2017 UA All America Uncommitted Game and the 2017 Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip.

Bloom notes that many of his coaches, including Tim Lucky and Ian Cassidy at Sanford, have helped him develop his lacrosse skills. He also cited his Team 302 Coaches: Jay Motta, Keevin Galbraith, Ryan McQuaide, Joey Giannaras, and Eric Giannetti. Additionally, Bloom credits his teammates, friends, and family for their support. He added: “My mom and dad have supported me tremendously throughout my lacrosse journey, and I would not have achieved the milestone of signing for a Division 1 program without their investment of time, money, and support. They did everything from getting me to practices and training sessions, to cheering for me at tournaments, to helping me explore colleges. They encouraged me and made it possible to pursue the sport I love to its highest level.”

Bloom loves the outdoors and likes to run, play soccer, hike, and mountain bike when not playing lacrosse. We wish Tommy Bloom a very successful spring season as a senior at Sanford, and we look forward to hearing of his future successes at the University of Delaware.
