Coach Waterman Helps Lead US to Victory at Nike Summit

For past 22 years, elite high school senior boys basketball players from across the country have been assembled to participate in the Nike Hoops Summit game, where they face a similar international team comprised of talented young men aged nineteen and under. On April 12, Sanford Coach Stan Waterman helped lead the United States to victory over the international players in this year’s contest, which was held at the Moda Arena in Portland, Oregon.
Coach Waterman joined US Head Coach Scott Fitch in leading the young men to their 93–87 victory. The win was especially impressive because the team only started practicing together on Wednesday prior to Saturday’s tip off. Despite a slow start, the young men never gave up and, with their victory, found a way to keep bragging rights in the United States for another year.

The Nike Hoop Summit showcases the stars of the sport in the very near future. A total of 217 NBA draft picks—149 from USA Basketball and 68 from world teams— have gone on to professional careers in basketball since the inception of this prestigious event.

The April contest marked Waterman’s fourth stint as a USA Basketball coach. Recently, Waterman served as a court coach at the 2018 USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team October Minicamp.

A University of Delaware and Howard High School standout, Waterman has been a very successful coach, teacher, dean, and mentor at Sanford School since 1990. Delaware is known as the Diamond State, and certainly Waterman is a gem. His talents have touched the lives of many Sanford students, and now we share him with the rest of the country. Luckily for us, Coach always finds his way back home!! Congratulations, Coach Waterman, on another successful coaching and teaching experience at the Nike Hoop Summit.
