Sanford Athletes and Coaches Capture Attention from USA Today Sports

USA TODAY High School Sports took notice of Sanford’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams and their coaches. Both Stan Waterman and Marcus Thompson were named as Delaware’s Boys’ and Girls’ State Coaches of the Year by USA TODAY.
In tapping Waterman, it was noted that in his 27th season as Sanford’s head coach, his boys have earned seven state-championship titles, bringing the school’s total to nine. This year’s state final game against previously undefeated Dover provided a very competitive contest, with Sanford claiming a 48–45 victory in the final seconds of the game.

Representing Sanford on the USA TODAY First Team was junior Jyare Davis, a 6’7” guard/forward. Also, the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year, Davis averaged 17.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, which helped lead Sanford to the DIAA state title. Sophomore forward/center Nnanna Njoku, a 6’10” standout, was named to the Second Team.

Coach Marcus Thompson patiently led his girls’ team to another state championship in the DIAA final game against Caravel Academy. USA TODAY noted that it was a thrilling victory, as the Lady Warriors went ahead in the last couple of seconds to win 51-49. This was the fourth state championship for Sanford during Thompson’s 15-year tenure as head coach, and the fifth title for the school.

Making the game-clinching shot in the state championship game was Sanford’s senior guard, Lauren Park, who was named USA GIRLS BASKETBALL Player of the Year. Park, who is 5’5” tall, averaged 13.2 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game. Park is heading to Seton Hall University in the fall and will continue her basketball career there. Joining Park on the USA TODAY Second Team are junior forward Allie Kubek and senior guard Olivia Tucker, who will play for St. Bonaventure University in the fall.

Congratulations to the coaches and players for earning this recognition and for working with their entire teams to bring home dual state championship titles in 2019!
