Sanford Students Sing in Holiday Spectacular

On Saturday, December 7, Students from Sanford’s Upper School Choir, along with some members of the Fifth- and Sixth-Grade Chorus, joined more than 50 group and individual performers at the annual Holiday Spectacular at John Dickinson High School.
Performing Arts Department Chair Clint Williams explained: “This is a huge musical event presented with a Radio-City type show format. It is an honor for Sanford to have the opportunity to join the cast of performers, ranging from talented individuals to the inspiring Delaware State University Steel Orchestra and the Professional Brass and String Quartet to an audience Sing-Along. We were so excited to have our students be a part of this holiday show.”

Songs showcased by the Upper School Choir included “Carol of the Bells,” “White Christmas,” and “Halleluiah Chorus.” Avery Flubacher '22, a bass, shared: “Saturday’s crowd was the largest I have ever performed for, and while it was initially nerve-wracking, the evening ended up being a memorable experience.” Cameron Brooks '22, who sings soprano, added: “For each of our songs, we went into the crowd, which was such a different experience from standing on risers. We were able to make the audience a part of the show. Also, having the organ as our primary musical accompaniment was very unique.”

Since 1970, the John Dickinson High School Theatre has been home to the Mighty Kimball Pipe Organ, an internationally acclaimed instrument and the fourth largest theatre pipe organ in the world. Originally built in 1928, the organ is capable of presenting the full palette of musical expression from Popular to Classical. The Dickinson Organ Theatre Organization is dedicated to both the preservation and the presentation of the organ. They offer a yearly assortment of concerts that feature the organ, and some of them—such as the Holiday Spectacular—are free, so that as many people as possible can enjoy the musical experiences.
