Brandon Dwyer Scores Big at Tournament

Brandon Dwyer '21 spent the first week of this year’s holiday break with his Warrior basketball teammates participating in the City of Palms Classic tournament in Fort Myers, Florida. One of the events held during the tournament was a Three-Point Shootout, a competition in which Brandon bested 24 other participants to bring home the trophy that declares him as the champion.
As a strong three-point shooter on the Warriors’ team, Brandon’s success at the City of Palms was very affirming. Brandon spends an hour running through his shots before most practices and stays after practice to continue working on shooting drills. In the offseason, Brandon spends a part of every day concentrating on his basketball skills.

Being named the Three-Point Shootout champion is exciting to Brandon, and it is not the first individual award he has earned. However, Brandon deflects the conversation from personal accomplishments back to the team. He shared: “The award I value the most is being able to say that our team won the state championship last year, and I want to focus my energies on trying to repeat that achievement. With regards to the recent tournament award, I may have been the one who came home with the trophy; but in my mind, I won it for my team, coaches, Sanford and the state of Delaware. It was great sharing the entire experience with my teammates.”

Some of Brandon’s earliest memories are centered around basketball. He recalled: “When I came to Sanford as a kindergartener, I remember watching the basketball team play. Right then and there, I had the realization that I wanted to play for that team when I was old enough to do so. I just love being a member of our basketball team, and it makes me happy that my dream has actually become a reality. I had a great time at the City of Palms, and I am appreciative of the opportunity to participate in that tournament. It gave me a chance to really bond with my teammates. I also learned that hard work pays off.”

Brandon is hoping to play basketball in college. For now, when he’s not playing or practicing the sport, he enjoys weightlifting, going to the beach, and hanging out with his friends. He also worked in Sanford’s Extended Day program and was an excellent role model for the younger students.
