Sanford Students Selected for Leadership Seminar
Two Sanford sophomores have been selected to participate in Delaware’s Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar. This summer, Amanda Belej and Ashley Schnyder will spend three days at Wesley College in Dover, DE where they will learn about leadership from local community leaders, perform community service, and engage in hands-on leadership-building activities with other high schoolers from around the state.
The criteria for their selection is based upon recognized leadership potential, which includes excellent communication and decision-making skills, creative problem solving, and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of others.
HOBY’s State Leadership Seminar, their flagship program, is designed to help high school sophomores recognize their leadership talents and apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, and community. The seminar’s curriculum is based on the Social Change Model of leadership, which develops leadership from three perspectives: personal leadership, group leadership, and leadership for society. After each seminar, HOBY alumni are challenged to complete 100 hours of community service as a way to put their newly developed leadership skills into action. Today, HOBY boasts more than 500,000 alumni worldwide.
Currently, the program is planned to take place in-person, but plans to transition to a virtual event will be formed as needed.
