Students Honored in Scholastic Art Awards Competition

Several Sanford students are being honored for their creativity and talent in the 2021 Scholastic Art Awards competition. The program, which is open to seventh through twelfth-grade students, is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for students in this age group.
This year's Middle School award winners, all of whom were honored in the photography category unless otherwise noted, are:
  • Avery Bollman. Avery received a Gold Key for her image entitled "Just Me." This entry has been selected for national-level competition and is under consideration for an American Vision Award. Avery also also a Silver Key for "Release."
  • Lola Borsello. Lola earned a Silver Key for "Fur Real" and a Silver Key for "White Ghost."
  • Siobhan Lucey. Siobhan received a Silver Key for "Burning Planet."
  • Arran Macleod. Arran won an Honorable Mention award for "Trust," a work entered in the drawing and illustration category.
  • Olivia Needham. Olivia was the recipient of Honorable Mention awards for "Shattered Lives" and "5 O'clock."
  • Ava Swann. Ava won a Gold Key for "Beauty & The Beast,"  a Silver Key for "Meat," and an Honorable Mention award for "Wearing My Emotions."
  • Pranali Viswanathan. Pranali received a Gold Key for "Triad" and  Silver Key, for "Nuclear Landscape."
Sanford's Upper School winners are:
  • Samara Durgadin. Samara won Honorable mention awards for her mixed media pieces, "The Thorns in My Brain" and "Smiley Face."
  • Emma Kovacs. Emma's piece "Hauntings" earned an Honorable Mention award in the drawing and illustration category.
  • Yuxuan Liu. Yuxuan received a Gold Key in the fashion category for "Refugee-AntiWar" and Honorable Mention recognition for her painting "Heaven in the Hell."
  • Daphne Tanner. Daphne won two awards—a Gold Key for her mixed media piece "The Coast" and a Silver Key for "Set in Stone," which was entered in the drawing and illustration category.
  • Yiheng Yao. Yiheng's photograph "Beijing CITIC Tower" netted him an Honorable Mention award.
  • Zehua You. Zehua was an Honorable Mention award winner for his painting "Time and Space."

Gold Key entries are automatically considered for national awards and direct scholarship awards. American Vision Award nominees compete for regional recognition.

This year, the Delaware State University Arts Center/Gallery (ACG) will be exhibiting a video presentation of Gold Key work until February 12th. This exhibition will also be available on the ACG website,  and ACG will highlight winners and other awards on their social media channels @DSUARTS.)

After receiving the news about the students' successes, Visual Arts Instructor Nina Silverman-Weeks said, "Let this stand as a testimony of how important creating art, specifically making lasting and memorable images, has become during this unprecedented time in history."
