Winter Athletes Soar This Year

In a year where normal seemed to be everything but, one piece of normalcy remained. The Sanford Warriors’ winter sports teams lived up to their lofty standards. Two state champs, two state runner ups. Business as usual.
With the cancellation of the 2020 basketball playoffs, both the boys' and girls' basketball teams took on every team’s best effort this year, as the Warriors were still the defending champions.

Although the girls' basketball team fell short against St. Elizabeth, 45–47, the season was still a success. The young team returns many of its players. This year was for experience—next year, the title.

The boys' team made sure the Warriors would capture at least one title. They rallied in the second half to beat previously undefeated Smyrna by a score of 51–45. Sanford relied on their calling cards, defense, and free throws, to ice the game late in the fourth quarter. Read more about the championship game on delawareonline.

Sanford Wrestling also had some top finishers statewide. Senior captain Jason Lamey finished at second place in his weight class as he wrapped up his high school career. Sophomore Justin Griffith didn’t lose on his way to capturing the championship for the 170-pound division. Justin will look to build on his success in pursuit of future wrestling titles for Sanford. Not all of Sanford’s teams ended at the top after this winter season, but the expectations placed on the teams, both internally and externally, were met. Now, the preparation for next season's climb to the top begins.
