Tyrone Perry Named Head Coach of Boys’ Basketball Team

The Sanford School administration is excited to announce that Tyrone Perry has been named as the new Head Coach of Boys’ Basketball at Sanford School. He fills the role that was held by legendary coach Stan Waterman for the past 28 years. Waterman recently announced his departure from Sanford to become the head men’s coach at Delaware State University. Perry was selected from a large group of highly qualified candidates.
Coach Perry is a 1999 graduate of the University of Delaware where he played basketball for former head coach Mike Brey.  His coaching resume includes assistant coaching roles with the University of Delaware men’s and women’s teams, as well as with the Mount St. Mary’s University men’s team.  Upon returning to Delaware, Perry served as the Executive Director of the McLaughlin Dream Chasers Program and is currently the Athletic Director and Teen Engagement Coordinator at the Clarence Fraim Boys and Girls Club.

Sanford Director of Athletics Joan Samonisky shares, “It is a big  responsibility to hire the right person to lead each of our Warrior sports teams. I am excited to have Tyrone Perry lead the Sanford boys’ basketball team following the departure of Stan Waterman. I feel we found the perfect fit! Ty will be a great addition to the Sanford School community, and we all wish him great success in this new era of Sanford basketball excellence.”

Mark Anderson, Head of School, concurs with Samonisky, adding: “When we set out to fill the head coaching role of our successful boys’ basketball program at Sanford, we knew we’d need to find a special person to succeed Stan Waterman. Ty Perry emerged as the right coach to lead our Warriors at this important time. Ty is a community leader, successful basketball coach, and an advocate for student athletes. We are confident Ty Perry is more than up for this job—and we welcome him to our Sanford community.”

Regarding his acceptance of the position, Coach Perry notes: “I have always respected Stan Waterman and Sanford basketball and therefore I am beyond excited to join the Sanford organization and grateful for the opportunity to continue the school’s legacy of basketball excellence.  I truly appreciate Joan and Mark’s warm welcome to the Sanford basketball family and am looking forward to meeting the players and community.”
