Scores of community members—including Sanford parents, trustees, employees, and alumni—contributed to the success of the fundraiser. BSU advisors Nathania Francois, Jamy Haughey, and Carlene Spencer commended the BSU leadership team (President Gianna Hernandez ’22, Vice President Island Lewis ’23, Treasurer Amiya Carroll ’22, and Secretary Fadima William ’23), for their perseverance in accomplishing a remarkable fundraiser with excellence. The money raised will support a trip to Washington, DC in March, the 2022–2023 HBCU Tour, and other future club events.
The BSU is dedicated to providing support for Black and brown students by creating a safe and brave space where club members gather to foster a community in which they can discuss the many topics that relate to Black culture and the Black experience in American society. Students are celebrated, uplifted, and empowered while being given the skills and tools to navigate their world.
Recent efforts to raise awareness about the BSU's mission include the development of a new logo by Island Lewis '23 and her family and the creation of BSU T-shirts by Sanford parent Sam Stanford.
