Gabriella Gandia Receives National Scholastic Art Award

Sanford School eighth grader Gabriella Gandia '26 is a National Medalist in the 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. For her photograph, “Flames,” she received a silver medal in the national competition.
Gandia’s photograph was one of more than 260,000 works of art and writing submitted by over 100,000 students. The 2022 Scholastic Awards were judged by leaders in the visual and literary arts. Just 2,000 works (the top 1%) were chosen for excellence in originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

Sanford Art Teacher Nina Silverman-Weeks recalled, "Gabby’s photograph also won a Gold Key at the regional level. Receiving national recognition for her work is quite an honor."'

Gandia’s winning photo will be published online at artandwriting.org in June with the gallery of honored work. Notable Scholastic Awards alumni include Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay Walkingstick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol, who won awards when they were teens.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Awards have celebrated teen artists and writers from across the country. The Alliance of Young Artists and Writers is the nonprofit organization that presents the awards.
