Waterman to Coach National Team

Stan Waterman will join the USA Basketball program as an assistant coach for the 2017 Men’s U16 National Team.
Along with head coach Don Showalter and fellow assistant coach Scott Fitch, Stan was selected for the post by the USA Basketball Men’s Developmental National Team Committee and approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors.

“I am honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the USA Basketball program,” Waterman said. “It is the thrill of a lifetime. I hope to bring leadership, energy, enthusiasm, passion and a knowledge of the game that will help to prepare our team to win a championship.”

The 2017 USA Basketball Men’s U16 National Team will aim to defend its four-straight gold medals at the 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Men, which will be held from June 14–18 in Argentina. (FIBA is the International Basketball Association, from its French name “Fédération internationale de basket-ball.”) In addition to another gold medal, the team will be competing for a spot in the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup, granted to the top four teams.

Training camp to determine the 12-member roster will take place from June 1–10 at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Athletes eligible for this team must be U.S. citizens who are 16 years old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 2001).
This honor caps an exciting year for Stan. Having recently completed his 26th season as Sanford's boys' basketball head coach, he led the team to its sixth state championship last year; won the Tubby Raymond Award for Delaware Coach of the Year from the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association; and was honored by the school with the dedication of a Sports Center basketball court in his honor and the establishment of the Stan Waterman Endowed Fund for Excellence in Coaching.

Stan—who wears many hats at Sanford by serving as dean of students and assistant athletic director±coached this year’s team to a 12–8 record, and the squad reached the quarterfinals in the state tournament.

As a player at Howard Career Center High School (Delaware), Stan helped his team reach the state championship game in 1981 and the semifinals in 1983. He played Division I basketball at the University of Delaware and earned a degree in sociology before joining the coaching staff at Sanford in 1990.

Congratulations and good luck to Stan and the USA U16 Men’s National Team!
