Four Faculty Members Honored with Endowed Awards

Four Sanford faculty members were recently honored with endowed awards that recognize excellence in professional development, teaching, leadership, and coaching.
Lower School Technology Coordinator Patrick Martin received the 2017 Paul Donovan Award for Excellence in Professional Development. Head of School Mark Anderson praised Pat’s “quiet leadership” and commitment to “his own continual training and learning,” and described him as “approachable, open-minded, and thoughtful...he has transformed the Lower School’s tech program--and in doing so, he has enhanced the Lower School experience for students.” The award was established in 2011 and is named in honor of former German instructor Dr. Paul Donovan, who passed away in 2009.

French instructor Fabienne Daniels earned the 2017 Lloyd Johns Award in Teaching Excellence, which honors “a member of the Sanford faculty who has an uncanny knack for challenging all students to push beyond what they believe is possible.” In his remarks at the awards ceremony, Mark Anderson said that “each day, [Fabienne] displays energy and passion for teaching her content, but more importantly, her teaching of children is an inspiration to all.” Her enthusiasm is so infectious and appealing to prospective families, he continued, that one visiting parent even asked if she could take Fabienne’s class. The award was established in 2013 and is named in honor of former US History instructor Lloyd Johns.

College Counselor and Upper School Math instructor John Ramsey received the 2017 Sue & André Dagenais Faculty Leadership Award, which honors “a member of the Sanford faculty who mentors, inspires, and encourages their students to aim higher than they thought possible.” Mark Anderson complimented John’s “unwavering optimism and sense of humor,” noting that he “roots for the underdog and celebrates the success of all students. He particularly emphasized John’s contributions to the Honor Council and the admissions committee. The award was established in 2013 and is named in honor of former Science instructor and Department Head André Dagenais and former Director of Counseling Sue Dagenais.

Baseball coach and Physical Education and Health instructor Jamie Clark received the inaugural 2017 Stan Waterman Award for Excellence in Coaching, which recognizes “an exceptional Sanford coach who embodies Stan Waterman’s high moral character, dedication to the development of the whole athlete, and outstanding sportsmanship.” Jamie is “passionate about his sport, a great teacher of the game, a tireless worker, and he truly cares about the development of those on his team, both as players and as young men,” said Mark Anderson. The award was established in 2016 and is named in honor of current Assistant Athletic Director and Boys' Basketball Coach Stan Waterman.

Congratulations to all of this year’s outstanding awardees!
