Stan Waterman Wins Gold as Assistant Coach of USA U16 Men’s National Team

Sanford Assistant Athletic Director and Boys' Basketball Coach Stan Waterman recently led the USA Under-16 Men’s National Team to a gold medal in the FIBA U16 Americas Championship 2017.
Brought on by head coach Don Showalter, Stan and fellow assistant coach Scott Fitch joined the team for training camp in Colorado Springs and for the tournament, held in June in Formosa, Argentina. The US team defeated Canada 111-60 in the June 19 final. Their victory secures them a spot in next year’s FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.

The USA surged to a quick lead in the gold-medal game, shooting for 60% from the field and ending the first half with a 25-point lead. The team never let up, ultimately dominating 111–60. USA player Vernon Carey Jr. was named MVP of the tournament, averaging 14 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in the five games the USA played in Argentina. With a 4–1 record, the Canadian team took silver, and the Puerto Rican team won bronze with a victory over Argentina.

The gold medal is the fifth straight by the USA at this annual tournament. FIBA is the International Basketball Association, the acronym derived from its French name, “Fédération internationale de basket-ball.”

“I am honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the USA Basketball program,” Waterman said on being named to the assistant coach position in the spring. “It was the thrill of a lifetime. My hope was to bring leadership, energy, enthusiasm, passion and a knowledge of the game that would help to prepare our team to win a championship.”

This victory caps an exciting year for Stan, who won the Tubby Raymond Award for Delaware Coach of the Year from the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association and was honored by the school with the dedication of a Sports Center basketball court in his honor and the establishment of the Stan Waterman Endowed Fund for Excellence in Coaching.
