“Bad Seed” Presented at Geipel Center for Performing Arts

Audiences who attended the Sanford Repertory Theatre Company performances of Maxwell Anderson’s popular, but thought provoking, play “Bad Seed” on November 3 and 4 in the Geipel Center may have been disturbed by the theme of the psychological thriller.
Additionally, they may have left the theatre with more questions than answers. For example, is the young, self-centered Rhoda merely spoiled by her parents, or has she inherited a gene that makes her truly evil? At what point should parents stop making excuses for their child’s behavior? But, the audiences undoubtedly also left with a sincere appreciation and respect for the talents of the 12 cast members who accepted the challenge of tackling uncomfortable subject matter. Director and Performing Arts Chair Clint Williams shared, “We selected this play because we have a responsibility to expose our students and community to many different types of theatre. The play is heavy and the subject matter is dark. This is a show that made the audiences think—and art should make you think.”

The stage crew, comprised of 32 students supervised by upper school instructors Elizabeth Capone, Jenn Kelman, and Ensign Simmons, collaborated with Tower Hill Technical Director Matthew Kator and worked hard to bring his set design to life. The students completely built and painted a beautiful apartment setting, including stairs, a swinging door, and a hand-cut archway. During the performances one group of crew members operated the sound and lights while others handled ticket and concession sales, acted as ushers, and provided set changes between scenes. “The stage crew was incredibly productive this fall, and we were all thrilled with the dedication and hard work they demonstrated,” stated Simmons. Costuming was supervised by Sanford parent Pam Allingham.

Congratulations to everyone who made this production a success.
