Andrew Brooks Signs National Letter of Intent with Kutztown

On Tuesday, November 14, family, friends, and faculty members joined Andrew Brooks '18 in the Stephen May Commons to witness the signing of his National Letter of Intent to continue his academic education and wrestling career at Kutztown University.
Andrew selected Kutztown, a division two school, because its student population size of about 9,000 makes it small enough to feel personal and big enough to provide options. Additionally, the wrestling program is nationally ranked and the team presents as a unified group of dedicated athletes. By attending a university within driving distance to Andrew’s home, he also ensures that his parents, Joe and Shellie, and his two older sisters, Cayla and Brittany, will be able to continue to be in the stands and offer the unconditional support that has meant so much to him as a student-athlete.

Andrew began wrestling at age six, and he has worked hard at the sport ever since. Since joining the Sanford student body in grade eight, Andrew has wrestled on the varsity team, earning numerous honors along the way. Until recently, Andrew wrestled in the 160-pound weight class and earned All-Conference 1st Team honors three times. Additionally, Andrew made All-State 3rd Team as a freshman and 1st Team All-State his sophomore year. Having spent most of his junior year with an injury that kept him on the sidelines, Andrew still placed fourth in his weight class in last year’s state tournament. This three-time team captain is healthy now and looking forward to his final season as a Sanford wrestler, where he will represent in the 152-pound weight class. The USA Wrestling Association has ranked Andrew 17th in the country at this weight for the 2018 season.

“Wrestling is so much more than practicing for two hours and then having a match,” shared Andrew. “It has taught me things like personal discipline, mental strength, and goal setting. Most importantly, it has given me a competitive spirit and sense of determination that I take into everything I do.” Andrew’s wrestling coach, Sanford History Instructor Eric Peoples, commented,
“Andrew’s talent is clear to anyone who watches him wrestle, but his work ethic and leadership are what separate him from his peers. What he does for Sanford wrestling behind the scenes is truly significant. He is an active leader and a great example for his teammates.”

When not wrestling, Andrew enjoys playing lacrosse, skimboarding, and working with the Sanford Admission Club. His most recent passion, however, is his volunteer work with the Muscle Movement Foundation (MMF). Having a friend fighting muscular dystrophy spurred Andrew’s involvement and has led him to fundraise for the organization. It has also helped shape Andrew’s career aspirations, as he plans to study some form of allied health at Kutztown with the hopes of pursuing post graduate work in chiropractic studies.

Before we send Andrew off with our very best wishes to Kutztown University, we will look forward to his final season as a Sanford wrestler and student leader.
