Sanford Scores Successes in DISC

Several of Sanford’s winter sports teams earned honors in the Delaware Independent School Conference.
Perennial competitors, the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams continued their winning streaks with conference championships. They were joined by the girls’ swimming team and five of our wrestlers. All of these teams along with four of the five DISC-championship wrestlers progressed to the state level of competition.

Lady Warriors' Basketball Coach Marcus Thompson led his team to their first 10-0 conference record for the first time in his 15-year tenure as head coach. “While there is no question that this team has enjoyed great success, it not something that we take for granted. We set goals and work hard to achieve them.”

Coach Stan Waterman has also used his 25 years of coaching experience at Sanford to help his boys’ basketball team earn continued conference-level success. “Winning is never a given, and this young team has grown as a result of their willingness to use their practice time and game day experiences to their benefit.” Like the girls' team, the Warriors were also 10–0 in conference play.

While wrestling matches take place one person at a time, Coach Eric Peoples, now in his second year as head coach, reminds his young men that they are very much a team, and they work together to support each other keeping that in mind. At the conference level, five students won matches in their weight classes: Logan Jacobs 106 lbs., Wyatt Seder-Burnaford 138 lbs., Kyle McDonough 145 lbs., Andrew Brooks 152 lbs., and Jason Lamey 160 lbs.

The Swim Team coaching staff—consisting of Jenny Morris, Lynn Correll, Josh Hitchens, and Brianna Smale—was extremely proud to have the girls’ team bring the DISC banner back to Sanford’s Sports Center for the first time since 2005.

Athletic Director Joan Samonisky commented on the accomplishments of these four teams by saying: “It is always fun and exciting to witness our student-athletes enjoy conference-level success. It is a fitting reward for their training, efforts, and growth.”
