Substance Abuse Prevention Program Emphasizes "Natural Highs"

For about an hour on Wednesday morning, loud cheers, popular music and uproarious laughter were heard coming out of the Geipel center. Can you guess what was going on inside?
You likely did not guess that students were attending a substance abuse prevention program, which is exactly why Sanford loves Dr. Matt Bellace’s unique approach to prevention. His style is the opposite of movements that use fear tactics to scare kids away from drugs (does anyone remember Scared Straight or Just Say No)? Instead, Dr. Bellace’s program highlights social support and finding ways to get high naturally, and he presents in a way that utilizes comedy to engage students and keep them focused on his powerful message.

During his presentations to parents and students, Dr. Bellace used the acronym L.E.A.D. to outline components of healthy living. His acronym begins with: Leaning on healthy people for support. He shared how teenage brains look different when making decisions while surrounded by peers versus when thinking independently and had the student audience cracking-up as he showed the importance of peer support with an audience-participation balancing demonstration.

Dr. Bellace also emphasized Expressing your emotions in a healthy way by Achieving natural highs every day. He shared his own experience with natural highs and encouraged students to come up with their own. Dr. Bellace concluded his presentation by telling students, “Don’t be afraid to take a stand.” He said, when faced with tough decisions, remember the importance of staying true to your core values and belief systems.

In many ways, Dr. Bellace’s presentation of natural highs fits right along with Sanford’s motto “No Talent Lies Latent.” Each individual is encouraged to find and nurture their passions—-their own natural highs! John Fritz, Upper School English teacher, commented on the power of Dr. Bellace’s message saying, “He may be one of the best speakers we have ever brought in on this topic.” Thanks to Dr. Matt Bellace for making us laugh and sharing this important message!
