Brendan Lamey Wins First State Title in Warriors Wrestling History

Sanford sophomore Brendan Lamey made school history Saturday, February 28th, when he won a state title in the DIAA Individual Wrestling Championship tournament, held at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes.
By beating his top-seeded opponent Tyreq Nelson of Woodbridge High School, 5–4, Brendan won his 145–lb weight class, making him the first state champion in Warriors' history.

"I've been striving to complete that goal since my eighth-grade year," Brendan said in an interview with The News Journal. "It feels great. I hope more of my teammates can join me in the state champions club next year."

A few of them came close. Kyle McDonough finished in second place in the 113-lb weight class, and Luke McDonough likewise earned second place for the 132-weight class. Niko Chilson and Andrew Brooks both earned place in their respective weight classes, 120 and 126, and Erik Lundberg came in fourth in 160.

“This is certainly a classic example of how hard work pays off!” said Athletic Director Joan Samonisky of the strong Sanford showing. “We are very proud of this group of student-athletes!”
