History & Global Studies (Grades 5–8)

The History and Global Studies Department of Sanford School is a nurturing environment that cares for the development of the students' empathy towards others, curiosity and joy in learning, and for their progression as a scholar.  We emphasize the skills of reading for understanding, research and analysis of historical events and primary documents, effective expository writing, oral expression and comparative thinking to produce a continuum of understanding of history and today’s world.  We use a variety of methods to achieve our goals, including cultural awareness and appreciation, time progression and historical perspective, group and individual strategies, and experiential learning.  Students personally experience history by visiting such places as Williamsburg and Washington, D.C.  We aspire to produce informed and responsible students who will participate in our democracy, and see a depth, as well as breadth, to the connections and patterns in history.  By maintaining Sanford School’s motto “No Talent Lies Latent,” the History and Global Studies Department relies on the Sanford Mission Statement and Guiding Principles for the teachers to provide our students with many and varied opportunities for growth in an academic atmosphere.
