Students Establish Club to Bridge Educational Gaps
In a TED Talk last year, Nia Naylor '20 shared her thoughts on the value of getting young people, especially those of color, more invested in their personal education. Working with Upper School science instructor Heather Foucault-Camm, Naylor helped to establish the Bridge Club with the specific intention of having Upper School students help younger students bridge educational gaps and better prepare for their middle and upper school experiences.
Each Wednesday after school, the Sanford van transports club members to the Charter School of New Castle, Naylor’s former school. “I know firsthand the challenges that young people can experience, especially when transitioning to a high school,” shared Naylor. Usually working one-on-one with students in grades two through four, Sanford students help the youngsters with their math and reading skills.
The younger students look forward to their work with their Sanford “buddies,” and are growing both academically and in their self-confidence. Naylor stated: “Because I am still impacted by my personal educational struggles, I want these young people to learn early that they are not defined by their grades. It is also important to me that they accept their academic challenges early, so they do not have to play catch-up. The Bridge Club and After-School Program are extremely important to me because it gives me an opportunity to give back to the community that helped shape me. All of the members of this club feel honored to be able to help the students and look forward to seeing their continued growth."
Joining Naylor in this club are: Amira Brownell '22, Amiya Carroll '22, Clay Cauley '22, Cameron Smith '20, Dasia Straker '20, Gianna Hernandez '22, Isiah Bracey '20, Jaylen Douglas '22, Kanisa Tucker '20, Lillian Bachtle '20, Michael Teixido '20, and Savannah Shepherd '20.
Congratulations to this group of dedicated Sanford students for sharing their time and talents to make a positive impact on the lives of others and for their commitment to community service.
