Sanford School is pleased to offer students in grades 9–12 a variety of course offerings to continue to actively engage the minds of teens throughout the summer. From SAT & ACT Prep courses to small group math and English enrichment your child is sure to find something that further develops their love of learning.

Classes run from June through August. Some classes will also provide credit to enrolled Sanford students. We welcome students from other schools to take advantage of our classes too. Hope to see you this summer!

  • Health - Session I: June 17 - 28

    Grade: Rising 9th-12th
    Instructor: Alaina Schumann - Sanford Science Instructor

    This summer health course focuses on wellness and the concept of health as a continuum. Throughout the course, students will explore various topics such as the history of diseases, communicable and chronic diseases, mental health, sexual education, drugs, alcohol, e-cigarettes, and other current health topics.

    *Sanford Students are required to attend all classes if they wish to receive school credit.
    **In observance of Juneteenth, Sanford will be closed on June 19, 2024. Class may be held virtually. 

  • Painting: June 17 - 28

    Grade: Rising 9th-12th
    Instructor: Stacey Hendrix - US Instructor
    Time: 9 AM-1 PM
    Cost: $375 
     
    In painting class, students learn to be inspired by still life, images, imagination, and nature through their exploration and observation of light, color, and composition using a variety of media and techniques. Students will have the opportunity to develop their personal style and to study the work of master artists.

  • SAT English: June 24 - 28

  • ACT English: June 24 - 28

    Are you a student in grades 10-12 preparing for the ACT English exam? Join us to receive content review, tips, tricks and strategies that will help you become more confident in the English section of the ACT. You'll be learning alongside your peers and a dedicated teacher to achieve your best possible outcome.
  • Introduction to Acting: July 8 - 19

    Grade: Rising 9th-12th
    Instructor: Noël Williams - Sanford Performing Arts Instructor

    This class is specifically designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of stage acting. Students will develop essential skills in acting improvisation, visualization, breathing, and relaxation techniques. Additionally, they will acquire a robust vocabulary of theater terms. No previous acting experience is necessary, as this class is open to all students. Don't miss this opportunity to embark on an exciting journey into the world of acting!

  • Math Enrichment - Algebra 1: July 8 - 12

    Individualized and supportive approach to math, whatever modality is needed to soar, Ms. Weber is able to provide!  The math enrichment course will cover a wide range of skills and will be tailored to the students who are enrolled. Students will work on their algebraic reasoning and problem-solving skills. Students will also review and strengthen previous skills, work on filling in any gaps of knowledge, and explore topics for next year’s course so that they can start with a strong foundation. Ms. Weber will be flexible with each student’s path through the course to ensure that everyone learns and grows from the material provided.

    *This course is designed for students who have COMPLETED Algebra I.
  • SAT Math: July 8 - 12

    Join us for a comprehensive SAT Math course where you will learn various problem-solving techniques tailored to the SAT.   • ACT Math: July 15 - 19

    This comprehensive course offers content review, valuable tips, tricks, and strategies specifically tailored for the Math section of the ACT. Boost your confidence as you learn alongside fellow students and a knowledgeable teacher.

  • Creative Writing: July 22 - Aug 2

    Grade: Rising 9th -12th
    Instructor: Mike Symons - Sanford English Instructor
    Time: 9 AM-1 PM
    Cost: $375

    Whether you're interested in journaling, novel writing, or curious to explore the power of the written word, this course will give you a chance to explore your unique voice on the page! Students will engage in all aspects of the writing process, from creative spark to publication submission! In this seminar-style writing workshop, students will keep a notebook where they respond to creative prompts and free-writes, eventually developing their favorites into complete poems and stories. They will both share their work and receive feedback as a writer and read the work of their peers and offer feedback as an editor. After only two weeks, students leave the course with a creative writing portfolio ready to be submitted for writing contests and publication!

  • Animation: July 22 - Aug 2

    Grade: Rising 9th-12th
    Instructor: Gavin Gibson - Sanford Art Instructor

    From stop-motion to video games, animation is integral to the creation of appealing and entertaining media. This animation course will educate you on the fundamentals of the craft and the technological literacy of current animation tools. By the end of this course, students will be able to 3D animate a movement sequence of their choice and learn to self-improve their own animation work for the future. This course will cover the basics of animation with a focus on applied animation skills.

  • Study Skills and Academic Readiness: Aug 5 - 9

    Grade: Rising 9th & 10th
    Instructor: Jackie Leo - Sanford Learning Support Instructor

    Are you looking to start the school year off with a powerful, effective, and (mostly) scientifically proven strategies to improve your academic performance, organization, and study strategies? This course will introduce you to practices and habits you can use to start the school year strong! These habits will enhance your success in academic courses by improving your study skills, maximizing your strengths, building upon your weaknesses, and ultimately creating a rock solid study plan and assessment prep checklist. Students will end the week with a binder full of information, strategies, and checklists they will need to embark upon a successful school year.
  • English Enrichment - Grade 9 & 10: Aug 5 - 9

    Grade: Rising 9th & 10th
    Instructor: Brianna McCoy - Sanford English Instructor
    Time: 9 AM-12 PM
    Cost: $275

    This English skills course will focus primarily on helping students strengthen their writing skills. In our endeavor to become better writers, we will read examples of good writing and discuss why it works. We will also do activities that will help students write stronger sentences with greater variety and sophistication, write paragraphs built upon analysis and evidence, and practice revision and editing skills. We will, of course, also study grammar as it is a primary tool of successful language use. Students will be given work and challenged at their particular level so that each enrolled students should be able to see growth.

Attendance & Report Policies

Sanford Summer Credits Policy
Sanford academic summer courses may be taken for transcript credit in place of a regularly scheduled class during the school year. Taking a summer course does not entitle a student to take a reduced class load during the next school year.  Additional questions about summer academic programs should be referred to the Director of Summer Programs. Questions about earning upper school credit should be directed to the Head of Upper School. 

Attendance & Vacations
Because of the nature of the summer session classes, attending all classes where graduation credit is earned is required. Attendance records are kept by teachers and will be part of individuals’ transcripts. Students taking classes for enrichment should discuss with the director and their teacher any planned absences before enrolling. 

Reports
The summer session faculty strives to maintain consistent communication with parents. Parents and designated schools will receive a final report for classes.
