Justin Griffith Wins Second State Title

On Saturday, February 26th, junior Justin Griffith became a two-time DIAA state champion in wrestling. Griffith, who captured the 2022 title in the 182-pound weight class, won with a 3–1 decision in overtime against Sussex Central's Josh Negron.
In 2021, Griffith earned his first championship  in the 170-pound division. Sanford Wrestling Coach Trevor Watson, who isn't surprised by the student-athlete's success, says: "Justin is an amazing kid on and off the mat, and he's also a great student. Sometimes winning and good sportsmanship don't go hand in hand when you have as much success as Justin has. Some people will let it get to their head and become cocky or a showoff—not Justin. He won our sportsmanship award for winning with grace, losing with pride, and always helping others out. He is very charismatic and always talking to someone, including his opponents, before matches. Justin sports a 3.8 GPA and is interested in pursuing a degree in computer engineering. As a senior next year, he will be seeking his third state championship and pursuing Sanford's all-time wins record as well as the Delaware all-time wins record."

Sanford Director of Athletics Joan Samonisky agrees with Watson's assessment, sharing: "Justin is a highly talented athlete. His easygoing, mild-mannered personality surprises many when he walks on the mat to compete. We are so proud of Justin's accomplishment as a two-time wrestling state champion!"
