Warner Commits to UMBC

As a state and conference champion swimmer, Bella Warner '20 has been courted by many colleges and universities. It was not until she met with the coaches and swimmers at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) did Warner feel at home. “I absolutely loved the people,” explained Warner. “The team was very welcoming, and the coaches are so passionate. There is an excellent dynamic between the coaches and the team. It felt natural to be there.”
Warner started swimming at age eight, after friends who played lacrosse told her they were going to swim in a summer league. Since then, Warner swam in the summer league, as well as year round at the club level. As a high school swimmer, Warner primarily swims in freestyle and butterfly events. She was recruited for the 500 free, 200 free, and 200 fly.

Coach Jason was Warner’s first summer league coach and still remains so today. She counts him among her primary supporters and values the lessons he has taught her, especially in helping her calm her nerves. Warner attributes her current coach, Coach Derek, for helping her gain both mental and physical strength, which has helped her achieve her goals. “He has taught me things that can be applied to real life. He stresses spreading kindness, acting responsibly, showing respect, and being honest and caring,” shared Warner.

Warner sees swimming as a unique combination of individuals and team. She elaborated: “When it comes to competition, no one can swim for you. It comes to down to you and the clock. During the training, teammates can offer support and encouragement and help you get better. In competitions, such as dual meets and championship meets, everyone’s placement counts, making it a true team effort. I have learned the benefit of having teammates lift me up and the importance of me doing the same for them.”

While most at Sanford know of Warner’s swimming success, she is also a talented singer who very much enjoys that creative outlet. She practices swimming at least 16 hours a week, so music offers a pleasant change of pace for her.

UMBC offers a pre-nursing program, which fits nicely with Warner’s desire to pursue nursing or speech language pathology as possible career options. With all prerequisite courses taken as an undergraduate while being a Division I athlete, Warner would be able to fully devote her time and energies to the clinical studies required as a graduate student.

Warner is excited to become a Chesapeake Bay Retriever and wear the school colors of black, white, and gold. She concluded by saying: “I am grateful to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at UMBC. Thank you to my parents, coaches, and teammates who have helped me along the way.”
