Leo Verbally Commits to Drexel

As the youngest of three, and the only girl, Annie Leo ’21 grew up playing sports with her brothers in her backyard. She started playing lacrosse as a second-grader, where she was, ironically, coached by Sanford dad Jonathan Nurry. From there, Leo started playing for the Kennett/Unionville travel team until they merged with Ultimate Lacrosse. It was through this team, coached by Michelle “DJ” DeJulius that Leo forged some of her best friendships, including with Sanford’s Katie Zabel. Leo stated: “I appreciate the high standards Coach DJ set for us, the skills she taught us, and the loyalty our teammates share.”
Leo found that same sense of family as a member of the Sanford Upper School lacrosse team, guided by Coach Laurie Deluca, who Leo calls her mentor. “I had the opportunity to start playing for the team as an eighth grader, and the older girls became like big sisters to me. Whether on the field or in the halls of the classrooms, my teammates are always kind and supportive,” shared Leo.

Both Leo’s mother and uncle are Drexel graduates, and she is excited to carry on the family legacy. September 1 of a student’s junior year is called “recruit day,” and Leo was excited to have been contacted by one of the lacrosse coaches. She elaborated: “I always knew I liked Drexel, but when I went on campus and met with the coaches, I knew right away that this school was going to be a perfect match for me. I felt welcomed and a part of the team right away.”

Leo is hoping to major in the health sciences, and with Drexel’s close proximity to area hospitals, the opportunity for a co-op at one of them will help Leo consider her possibilities, explore options, and narrow her choices.

For now, Leo will concentrate on her next two years at Sanford, where she is also a member of the field hockey team. She plays soccer recreationally and loves being at the beach and swimming in the ocean. When it is time to play at the highly competitive Divison I collegiate level, Leo will find the Drexel Dragons’ colors of blue and gold very comfortable and familiar. While she is excited for that time to come, Leo credits much of her success to her time at Sanford. She explained: “Playing D-I college lacrosse has been my dream since I was 12 years old. Playing for Drexel is what I worked for, and it is actually going to happen. But, I must thank Sanford, as I can confidently say that I am the student, player, and person that I am today because of this community and everyone that I am surrounded by at Sanford.”
