Sanford Middle Schooler is Featured Speaker at Award Banquet

As both a founding member of Scouts BSA Troop 1923—Delaware's first troop for girls—and a First Class Scout, Scarlett was the clear choice to do the honors. She has progressed quickly and with focused ambition through the first four ranks of Scouting, taking full advantage of opportunities to develop her character, outdoor skills, and leadership abilities, and she hopes to be in the first group of female Eagle Scouts in the state and perhaps even the country.

Scarlett's smoothly delivered, five-minute speech shared her perspective on being a girl in Scouting, included notes of humor, and earned her a hearty standing ovation and accolades from the speakers who followed. Even more rewarding, Scarlett’s speech will count toward earning her Communications merit badge—a requirement for any future Eagle Scout.

Sharing the experience with Scarlett were her parents, Sanford faculty members Todd and Shannon Helmecki, brother Mason Helmecki ’26, troop leaders and Sanford parents Patrick and Catherine Kaser, and Mr. George McDowell, who represented the troop’s charter organization, St Barnabas Episcopal Church.

The Del-Mar-Va Council serves over 9,600 families throughout the peninsula, including 600 in outreach programs that provide programs to under-served neighborhoods in four key communities. Nearly 30 full time staff and more than 3,300 registered volunteers work with youth to teach them new skills, build their self-esteem, and reinforce the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
