Sanford Athletes to Play Lacrosse at Division One Level

Earlier this month, two Sanford students committed to continuing their athletic careers by playing lacrosse at the NCAA Division one level.
Collin Campbell recently committed to St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, and Devon Lucky committed to Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut, where his brother Tim ‘21 will also play lacrosse next fall. Both Campbell and Devon Lucky are juniors at Sanford.

Lucky began playing for Sanford’s varsity boy’s lacrosse team as an eighth-grader, and Campbell joined the team his freshman year. In addition to their roles on Sanford’s varsity lacrosse team, Lucky and Campbell each play on club lacrosse teams outside of school.

Sanford Lacrosse Coach Ensign Simmons recalls how even as an eighth-grader, Lucky “immediately contributed to the team,” and eventually transitioned into a greater leadership role. “[Now], he makes sure his teammates are focused and on-task, whether it is stretching before practice or during timeout late in a close game.”

Similarly, Simmons praised Campbell’s development as a lacrosse player, noting that “Collin has become more confident and consistent. His field awareness and understanding of the game have allowed him to be a dominant player game in and game out.”

Lucky and Campbell’s commitments come after Sanford’s 2020 lacrosse season was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Since then, high school athletics have resumed in Delaware, and club teams are still able to operate in anticipation of the spring high school lacrosse season.

The whole Sanford community hopes to see Lucky and Campbell back on the lacrosse field in the spring to build on the success of their 2019 season, which saw the boy’s lacrosse team finish with a 13-2 regular season record and advance to the second round of the state tournament. “Sanford’s lacrosse program has flourished over the recent years,” notes Simmons. “Both players have developed as part of this team and the team has developed because of players like Collin and Devon...They are both exceptional talents, and we are very fortunate to have them both right now.”
