2023 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductions
During our recent Homecoming, we celebrated the achievements of Carter Ayars '16 and the 1991 & 1992 Boys Varsity Basketball Teams by inducting them into the Sanford Athletic Hall of Fame.
The victorious '91 and '92 teams were led by coaches Thom Shumosic and Stan Waterman and featured an array of talented players, all of whom shared a profound passion for the game and commitment to their team.
Former Athletic Director Chip Mayo highlighted the teams' collective efforts during his speech, praising their commitment to one another and their achievement in securing back-to-back State Championships.
Carter Ayars '16 is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Sciences in Concussions in Amateur Sports in England; her father represented her due to her current athletic commitments.
Former Athletic Director and Field Hockey Coach Joan Samonisky shared an endearing story about Carter's passion for field hockey since childhood. She predicted Carter's success early, presenting her with a custom-made hockey stick at her older sister's end-of-season banquet.
Today, Carter is the captain of a team in the Women’s Vitality Premier League in England, proving Joan's prediction right.
We congratulate these Sanford Athletes for their achievements.
