Alum Brings Car Show to Campus

Sanford’s Sports Center parking lot was jammed packed on Sunday, April 23rd with more than 200 specialty autos for the 6th Annual “Cruise for a Cure” car show.
For many of the spectators, the warm, sunny day was all about the classic, antique, street rods, and muscle cars that were on display. However, it was much more personal for event coordinator Angie Crowl. Her husband, Alvin, passed away from scleroderma, an auto immune disease that causes the body to over produce collagen, often endangering the soft tissue surrounding internal organs, such as the lungs. The more than $20,000 raised from the event will be used by the Scleroderma Foundation of Delaware to further their mission to elevate awareness of the disease and provide support groups for patients and their families, friends, and caregivers. “If we can help one person or family, then our efforts are worth it,” said Crowl.

Fee Sepahi, a 1979 Sanford graduate, is another champion in the fight to find a cure for scleroderma. As executive director of the Scleroderma Foundation of the Delaware Valley, it was Sepahi who worked with Janice Payne, director of development, to move the venue to Sanford School. “It is very exciting to have my Alma Mater join me in our fight against scleroderma by opening up this beautiful campus for our show. Everything about scleroderma is hard: it is a hard word to say, a hard word to remember, a hard disease to have to fight, and a hard disease to watch someone you love battle. But, when you look at the greenery all around us and take in the views of this special school, at least for a while at this show things are a little bit brighter.”

Sepahi noted that Crowl announced that she will be stepping down from her leadership role in the “Cruise for the Cure” event. He is hopeful that the torch will be passed to someone from the area, thus allowing him annually to return to Sanford to combine his love for the school with his commitment and passion for finding a cure for scleroderma. The foundation’s website address is http://www.sfdv.org. “No one has to wait until the next fundraiser to get information about scleroderma,” concluded Sepahi.
