Middle School Students and Faculty Explore Europe

Ten of Sanford’s middle school students accompanied by two faculty chaperones returned to Delaware on June 27th from a ten day, fun-filled trip to Europe.
The Sanford group was led by Head of School Mark Anderson and Middle School French Instructor Fabienne Daniels. The group visited Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, France, and Spain on their expedition. In Switzerland, they toured Lucerne and swam in its glacier lake. They went on an exciting ride on a cogwheel train up to Mount Rigi in the Swiss Alps and came back in a cable car. The group stayed in a chalet hotel in the middle of the breathtaking Swiss Alps during their visit. They then traveled down to Lake Como and stayed in a hotel on the Italian Riviera. There, Daniels recounted commented, they swam at sunset until the light faded at 10:00 PM. The Sanford convoy visited Cinque Terra, rented chairs and umbrellas, and swam in the Mediterranean, spent a morning in Monaco, then made their way to Nice, France.

In France, the middle school group wandered along the French Riviera and visited the Calanques Unesco heritage natural site by boat. They made it to Provence, Avignon to visit the Pope Palace, and see the lavender fields in Le Pont D’Avignon. They finished their visit in France with a trip to Arles where they visited the Arenas and swam in the Gard River under the old Pont du Gard. To cap off their trip, the group spent two days in Barcelona, Spain where they ate paella and saw a traditional flamenco show.

According to Daniels, the trip was a wonderful success and opened the kids’ eyes to how diverse the world is. She remarked, “[The] Sanford kids were awesome, spread their kindness everywhere they went, tried to speak every language we were exposed to and definitely ate all of the different food we had the opportunity to taste!”

Welcome back to all of the students and faculty who participated in this unforgettable cultural experience.
