Sanford Parents Selected as 2017 Top Doctors

Sanford students are not the only ones who work hard to develop and share their talents; their parents do, too!
The October issue of Delaware Today features the results of this year’s voting to determine the top doctors in 63 specialties, where voters are asked to make their selections based on “the physician that you would most recommend to a loved one.” The following top doctors are Sanford parents whose children are current students and/or Sanford alumni: Dr. Ray Blackwell, Dr. Carolyn Glazer-Hockstein, Dr. Eric Kalish, Dr. Nancy Petit, Dr. Mark Cadungog, Dr. Michael Teixido, Dr. Neil Hockstein, Dr. David Zabel, Dr. Alfred Bacon III, Dr. John Townsend III, Dr. Peter Rocca, Dr. Thomas Burke, Dr. John Reinhardt, and Dr. William J. Schickler.

Drs. Blackwell and Glazer-Hockstein share a double-page spread in the magazine on pages 60–61, which includes a more detailed overview of their skills and expertise.

Ray Blackwell is a cardio-thoracic surgeon and chief of cardiac surgery for Christiana Care Health System, as well as the father of Arielle '08, Ashely '16, and Asia '20. Having learned that he had high blood pressure as a young man of 20, Dr. Blackwell made the lifestyle changes necessary to help keep his blood pressure under control, including becoming a competitive runner and an annual participant in the Heart Association Heart Walk. Dr. Blackwell also chairs Christiana Care’s Blood Pressure Ambassador Advisory Committee, all while being an active participant in the Sanford community.

Carolyn Glazer-Hockstein, a board member of the Delaware Academy of Ophthalmology, practices in Wilmington. She states in the magazine, “One of the most important things you can do for your eye health is to take care of yourself.” She includes eating a healthy diet to keep blood sugar and cholesterol under control while maintaining an appropriate weight among her suggestions. Dr. Glazer-Hockstein often treats patients with retinal avascular disease and age-related macular degeneration, which can cloud the vision of older citizens. She also conducts research in these areas. Dr. Glazer-Hockstein’s daughter Leia is in the class of 2021.

Eric Kalish—parent of Lindsay '22, Carson '25, and Morgan '27—is one of four board certified general surgeons in the Delaware Surgical Group. Dr. Kalish's practice specializes in all areas of general surgery and minimally invasive surgical techniques including advanced laparoscopy and robotic surgery.

Nancy Petit—parent of Alex '08, Lauren '11, and Andrew '11—was among those featured as one of Delaware’s best obstetricians and gynecologists. Dr. Petit practices at St. Francis Hospital and is known for her calm, compassionate care.

Mark Cadungog is a member of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the Helen F. Graham Center and serves as the director of robotic surgery for the Christiana Care Health System. He is the father of Jonas '26 and Siena '29.

Michael Teixido, who practices with ENT & Allergy Associates of Delaware, is a board certified otolaryngologist and otologist/neurotologist  with a special interest in medical and surgical conditions that affect hearing and balance. Dr. Teixido's son Michael is in the class of 2020.

Neil Hockstein is a board certified otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon affiliated with ENT & Allergy Associates of Delaware. Dr. Hockstein cares for patients with diseases of the ears, nose, and throat with particular focus on treatment of nasal and sinus problems and surgery on the head and neck. He is the husband of Dr. Carolyn Glazer-Hockstein (listed above) and the father of Leia '21.

David Zabel, owner of Zabel Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and chief of plastic surgery at Christiana Care Health Systems, specializes in reconstructive surgery and wound care. Dr. Zabel is the father of Zoe '14, Bradley, '17, Andrew '19, and Katherine '21.

Alfred Bacon, who specializes in infectious disease with Infectious Disease Associates, is affiliated with Christiana Hospital and Wilmington Hospital. Dr. Bacon is the father of Eliza '01 and Julia '06.

John Townsend, of Delaware Neuroscience Specialists, is board certified in neurology and sleep medicine disorders. Dr. Townsend is the father of Jeffrey '06 and Richard '09.

Peter Rocca, of the Delaware Arthritis and Osteoporosis Center, is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both rheumatology and internal medicine. Dr Rocca's daughter Lisa is a member of the class of 2015.

Thomas Burke, of Burke Dermatology, practices general dermatology and has a special interest in cosmetic dermatology and MOHS skin cancer surgery. Dr. Burke's son Luke Mezick-Burke is a member of the class of 2028.

John Reinhardt, an infectious disease physician, is affiliated with Christiana Care Health System. His daughter Laura graduated from Sanford in 2004.

William Schickler is a vascular surgeon who practices with Vascular Specialists of Delaware, PA. His son Colin is a member of the class of 2007.

Congratulations to these doctors for their well-deserved recognition and for being wonderful role models for our Sanford students.

Attending the Best of Delaware party in support of these professional standouts were Sanford parents Samuel and Felicia Brownell. They are the parents of Adam '24 and Amira '22. Their photo can be found on page 38 of the magazine.
